Isthmian League

Richard Corrigan

There will be a minute’s applause before Saturday’s pre-season 1pm kick off against Hassocks to celebrate the life of our former goalkeeper Richard ‘Dick’ Corrigan, who passed away recently at the age of 84. His family will be represented at the game.

Richard played for the Hawks from 1967 to 1971.

He was last at the Enclosed Ground with many of his old friends for the celebration we held to mark 50+ years of service to the club by John Rosenblatt on National Non-League Day 2023. Richard also played for a number of other Sussex non-league sides including Newhaven, Southwick, Shoreham and Littlehampton Town.

The picture above shows Richard in goal for Burgess Hill at the Enclosed Ground in 1972, as his team defend a shot from Chris Burgess. Note the old square wooden goal posts that used to occasionally break.

Outside of football, Richard was famous for having worked on the design for the Bluebird vehicles that attempted land and water speed records.

Richard’s funeral is at Downs Crematorium on Friday 5th July at 1pm. At Richard’s request, those attending are asked not to wear black. There is a small private remembrance service after the funeral.
