Got Time On Your Hands This Saturday? Read on!
Burning the Clocks is a winter solstice festival that takes place each year in Brighton.
Founded in 1993, the celebration is based on a procession of lanterns and costumes, made from withies (willow canes) and white tissue paper, led by local bands with a carnival atmosphere. The procession makes its way through Brighton city centre to the seafront where the festivities culminate in a lantern bonfire, accompanied by fireworks. The costumes all include a clockface to represent the passing of time, although each year has a slight change of theme.
We’ve received a request from organisers Same Sky, to reach out to the Whitehawk community, for them to join in the Parade taking place this Saturday!
Here’s their message in full:
To All Whitehawk FC Players, Members and Fans, We’re reaching out with an exciting opportunity to join one of Brighton’s most magical events—Burning the Clocks—this Saturday!
We need volunteers to bring this incredible event to life. You can join as one of two vital roles:
1. Deerfolk (12 slots)
- Age requirement: 18+
- Role: Get competitive and support the fundraising efforts by playfully encouraging donations. You’ll be lightly “beating” participants with foam sticks (it’s all in good fun!).
- Meeting point: Brighton Unitarian Church at 4:00 PM to get your costume and instructions.
- Clothing: dress warm and for wet weather.
2. Giant Puppet Operators (27 slots)
- Ideal for families and teenagers
- Role: Operate giant puppets along the parade route! This involves being comfortable traveling for 2 hours and lifting up to 2kg.
This is a unique chance to be part of an iconic community celebration while supporting an unforgettable evening of creativity and connection.
If you’re interested in volunteering, please message Robert@samesky.co.uk for details
Come and represent Whitehawk FC and YOUR Community with pride and help make Burning the Clocks a night to remember!
