Saunders | “I’m expecting a real tough game”

Whitehawk return to league action on Saturday afternoon with a venture to Folkestone in store. We sat down with manager Shaun Saunders to gather his thoughts on game ahead.

So Shaun, what sort of game are you expecting on Saturday?

“I’m expecting a real tough game. I’ve been there a few times now over the years and we’ve never had anything over than a real tough battle of a game. I’m expecting no different – they’ll be very good and we’ll have to be better to get a result. It’s one that we’re looking forward to, we want the games to come thick and fast now, we’ve been in good form, so we’re excited.”

Moving deeper into September with the squad taking shape. Do you think you know your best starting XI?

“No, I don’t to be fair! You’ve seen the bench for the past couple weeks, how strong it is. There’s competition for places, everybody seems to be fit at the moment. Whatever side I seem to have put out so far this season have put in a real shift, so I’m still yet to nail it down yet.

But that’s a good thing, the lads have been unbelievable, every one of them. The squad of 18 that we’ve got have all put a marker down and staked a claim for a place, so team selections are really difficult at the moment! The last two or three weeks I’ve been tossing and turning on a Friday night with team selection — not problems, they’re problems that you want — but it’s tough at the moment. Everybody is training really well, and they’re performing as well so it’s difficult!”

Folkestone have had a little dip in form as of late. Is this something you consider as manager?

“It’s like everything I’d expect them to make a reaction on Saturday after what has been a tough week for them, but we know, I know, that they have some really good players that can hurt you if you’re not switched on, so I’m expecting a tough game regardless of form; they’re a good side”
