Remembering Alex South

We are saddened to learn the passing of former Whitehawk centre-half, Alex South, at the age of 93.

Growing up in Whitehawk in the 1930s, South would start an illustrious football career with Whitehawk & Manor Farm Boys Club, and was a member of the team that won the Sussex Minor (Youth) Cup the same season.

He played for the Hawks in the 1947–48 season when they finished title winners of the Brighton & Hove District League Division 4, before he signed a professional contract the Brighton & Hove Albion.

South was signed by his former Albion manager Don Welsh at Liverpool for £5,000 on 10 December 1954. He made his debut in an FA Cup third round replay at Anfield against Lincoln City on 10 January 1955, followed by six further league appearances.

He scored his only goal for Liverpool in a 4–4 home draw with Luton Town on 2 April 1955. After his contract expired at Anfield, South joined Halifax Town, going on to make over 300 appearances before retiring in 1965.

Rest in Peace, Alex.

Good call. You’re thinking of the Brighton Charity Cup at the Goldstone at the end of the 59-60 season. Bert got the third goal in the 68th minute with a brave header in a 3-1 win, playing centre forward. He injured himself but carried on after treatment. That was the game Ken Powell then broke his wrist trying to convert another header from Bert – so missing the cup presentation as he was at the hospital with his Dad Ken. Andy Lower from that team passed away recently too. I’ve updated the post to include your info. Thanks
