It runs in the family for Hawks fan Scott Welch
Former professional boxer Scott Welch, who organises gym sessions for the first team squad at Brighton and Hove Amateur Boxing Club (B&HABC), is celebrating his son Tommy following in his father’s footsteps as a professional fighter. Tommy has his first pro fight this Friday in Redditch, which will be shown live on Channel 5.
Scott, known as the ‘Brighton Rock’, is a former WBO British and Commonwealth champion. He retired in 1999 and is now a successful businessman, as well as being Chairman of the WBC Cares UK initiative. Scott is also well-known locally for organising gym sessions for Brighton school kids, where his leadership and that of the other coaches at the B&HABC aim to influence youngsters to make wise choices with their lives.
Chairman Andy Schofield said: “Scott’s work with young people in Brighton is well-known and highly valued. The coaches at the gym have as much to say to the squad about team spirit and character as they do about fitness, which is quite an eye-opener. Scott even turned up at our training the other night, just to keep an eye on things. Let’s hope things work out well for Tommy, as he starts his pro career.”
