Recap

Guernsey 1-2 Whitehawk

Whitehawk made it 10 games unbeaten, holding off a late Guernsey onslaught to win 2-1 in the Channel Islands.

Both sides came into the game on the back of disappointing results with the Green Lions defeated last weekend 2-1 by Phoenix Sports and the Hawks drawing 1-1 at East Grinstead on Tuesday and they both started the game fairly evenly, creating a few half chances each with Kieran Mahon and Lucas Rodrigues coming closest for their respective sides. The Hawks however struck first to break the deadlock after Rodrigues found Hawks captain Henry Muggeridge in a good position who saw his shot hit the post and rebound as far as Ahmed Abdulla who tapped into an empty net despite protests from the Guernsey fans for an offside flag. The Green Lions responded to going behind well with Ross Allen and Matthew Loaring forcing great saves from Hawks keeper James Broadbent. Whitehawk however could and should have gone into the half 2-0 up after Lucas Rodrigues, who appeared to be pulled back in the penalty area with no foul given, going on a mazy run to find Rhyle Ovenden who fired wide for the Hawks.

Guernsey had chances a plenty to draw level and in the 64th minute they certainly should have scored as Carlos Cunha somehow only tapped his shot into the arms of Broadbent, despite having the whole goal at his mercy. That miss proved costly as eight minutes later the Hawks doubled their lead after a long goal kick from James Broadbent found Lucas Rodrigues who danced his way into the penalty area, avoiding numerous defensive challenges, to tap home and make it 2-0. As the game entered the closing stages, the Green Lions came to life and started to dominate with Liam Mahon forcing Broadbent into an excellent save. Unfortunately from the resulting corner Guernsey grabbed a goal back with Tom Strawbridge heading in. The remaining stages, and certainly the lengthy nine minutes of stoppage time, was torturous for those associated with the Hawks with Guernsey camping in our half for most of added time, however a solid defensive effort saw us fly home with 3 points safely in the bag.
