Earlier in his career, Joel played a season under Shaun Saunders at Haywards Heath Town while an U18 player for the Hawks. He left the Enclosed Ground for a title winning season at Horsham, after 89 appearances in his first spell at the club.

Joel’s brother James plays for Yeovil Town in the National League.
