Recap

Whitehawk 5-1 Herne Bay

Whitehawk ran riot at The TerraPura Ground on Saturday afternoon after a dominant 5-1 victory over Herne Bay.

From the first blow of the referee’s whistle, the Hawks dominated affairs, though the visitors had the first chance of the game after 4 minutes with Kieron Campbell forcing James Broadbent into a comfortable save. It was the Hawks however who struck first after Duane Ofori-Acheampong rose brilliantly to head a smart cross from Connor Tighe past a helpless Rob Budd after 14 minutes. Just 6 minutes later, Tighe turned from provider to scorer after unleashing a powerful shot from 20 yards out to make it 2-0. Soon after it could have easily been 3-0 to the Hawks though some last ditch defending by Bay captain Laurence Harvey denied David Martin. Herne Bay had chances to get back into the game, though strikes by Chris Saunders and Zac Ansah flew well over the bar.

Whitehawk started the second half similar to the first with a relatively early goal, again from Duane Ofori-Acheampong after being played in with a well-timed cross from Fintan Walsh. A potential turning point for the game came after 64 minutes with Kieron Campbell scoring from 20 yards out for the visitors. This seemed to spur them on as successive chances from Campbell and Zac Ansah were well blocked and comfortably dealt with by the Hawks’ defence. Whitehawk’s three goal lead was restored 11 minutes from time with 72nd minute substitute Rob Deda dancing through the penalty area and slotting past a helpless Budd in the Herne Bay goal for his first ever senior goal. The Herne Bay team should be thanking Budd as he made a string of brilliant late saves to deny the Hawks with Ofori-Acheampong, Lucas Rodrigues and Alfie Rogers all having attempts denied by the Bay stopper. Duane finally got his hat-trick in added time after beating the keeper at close range to seal an emphatic win for the Hawks.
