World Premiere of The Film, ‘Hawks, Anti-Idiots’
FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCE WORLD PREMIERE OF HAWKS DOCUMENTARY FILM
Brighton Rocks International Film Festival, in collaboration with Whitehawk Football Club and Al Jazeera Documentary, is proud to be hosting an exclusive screening of ‘Hawks – Anti-Idiots’, a joyous documentary about the football club directed by Hossam Sarhan.
The event will take place at the amazing central Brighton space Wagner Hall on Saturday, September 16. Doors open at 6:30 pm for guests to enjoy a drink in the venue’s secluded city centre garden oasis before the screening, which will be followed by a Q&A. There’s also music from the Hawks’ official house band, ‘The Whitehawk Isolators’.
Hawks – Anti Idiots shines a light on Brighton’s second biggest and premier non-league football club, and showcases the team’s passionate following and the benefits that this has brought to the local area.
All English teams aspire to reach the heady heights of the professional game, and the Hawks are no exception, but they provide a refreshing exception given their dual mission to confront, sexism, racism, homophobia and bigotry in all its forms, as reflected in their slogans, ‘Football For All’ and ‘Pro-football, Anti idiots.’ They do not separate their sports struggle from the social struggle, and football for them is a way to support the marginalised in communities around the region.
Filmmaker Hossam Sarhan, who made this film with Al Jazeera Documentary, describes his work set in Brighton as; “A powerful exploration of the intersection between sports and social justice. The film follows a group of football fans who use their passion for the game to advocate for human rights and support refugees. Hawks – Anti Idiots showcases the transformative impact that sports can have on individuals and communities alike.”
Sarah Smith, Deputy Director of Brighton Rocks said; “The Brighton Rocks International Film Festival has established itself as a festival that supports independent cinema and is proud to support Hossam’s work to create meaningful, impactful films that inspire change”.
It is the first of a series of ‘One Night Stand’ special screenings held outside of our main festival in June.
For Whitehawk Football Club, Kevin Miller said, “When Hossam approached the club and pitched the idea of the film, I though it would be a brilliant opportunity to showcase our amazing fans, celebrate all that’s good about our ethos and our community.”
He added, “By the last day of shooting Hossam and his film crew had fallen in love with the club and the fans and this partnership has been an absolute honour and pleasure.”
