Buildbase FA Trophy First Round
Saturday 16 December 2017

There were certainly plenty of positives for Whitehawk on Saturday, but a much better performance wasn’t enough to see them progress in the FA Trophy.

Goals from Zane Banton and Louis Monlouis saw St. Albans City progress to the Second Round at the expense of a brave Whitehawk side, who are unlucky not to be in the hat on Monday.

The Hawks made a promising start, with Ramone Rose testing James Russell before Ky Marsh-Brown produced a great solo run as he inside from the left, only to see his low drive turned away by the diving keeper.

It was therefore frustrating for the hosts when they fell behind through a defensive mistake just after the 15-minute mark. Ermal Hajdari played a poor pass across the defence which Zane Banton latched onto, and one on one with Sam Donkin made no mistake.

The Hawks, however, kept having the large share of play, with Pape Gueye wasting a great opportunity to draw the hosts level when one on one with Russell – the keeper denying him with his legs after the half hour mark.

And Steve King’s side continued to press after the break, and got the equaliser their efforts deserved in some style seven minutes in. Lucas Rodrigues’ cross was headed away but as far as the dangerous Marsh-Brown, and from the edge of the area he controlled the ball well before his rasping volley found the top corner.

However, they were level for all of nine minutes, and again it came against the run of play. A short corner was never really cleared by the Hawks defence, and a header across goal dropped to an unmarked Kieran Monlouis who bundled in from six yards.

Sam Chaney then came close to drawing the hosts level with twenty minutes to go. Good work from Rodrigues saw him find the on-loan Torquay attacker who turned well but Russell did equally as well to turn his effort around the post.

Despite the Hawks huffing and puffing for the equaliser, it wasn’t forthcoming to put an end to any Wembley hopes for this year.
