Saunders | “We won’t get too downbeat”

So Shaun, a disappointing night in Kent. How you evaluate your side’s performance?

“Again, I didn’t think the performance was that bad. We just switched off defensively for the two goals, which is unlike us.

But overall, even when we went down to 10 men we were still probing. Frustrating, but I’m not too downbeat. We’ve had a great start; we didn’t get too carried away with our start, and we won’t get too downbeat with back-to-back defeats.

We know we need to get back at it as soon as possible. If we can get a couple of bodies back on Saturday – we’re hopeful of that – then we’ll go to Chichester in a better place.

So, not too downbeat! You can’t get too carried away with winning or losing so we’re trying to keep a balance but, I think of injuries that have affected us over the last couple of games and with Charlie [Harris] coming out 25 minutes into the game, that obviously affected us.

But we worked hard, it just wasn’t to be on the night.”

Are there any positives to take from last night?

“The second half, definitely. Because there were a few things said at half time from all of us and I asked them at half time: minimum we win the second half, minimum we don’t concede and we did that, so the positives were a much better second half performance and the first half wasn’t that bad, we just switched off for the two goals and the timing for the second one was a bad time to concede so that affected everything.

But it affects you, when you’ve got a settled side and you get two or three injuries. So, we’ve had a little bit of a wobble, but it’s my job to make sure that doesn’t last much longer.”

Every team goes through a rough patch, but how do you try and get your side back to winning ways?

“Strip it back, work harder, and go back to basics. Go back to doing what got us in the position that we’re currently in. So it’s just a case of rolling our sleeves up and working harder.”
