Saunders | “I trust this group against anybody in this league”
It’s 2nd vs 3rd once more in this ever-evolving league as Shaun Saunders’ side venture to the Medway towns to try and break Chatham Town’s unbeaten home record. Just three points shy, victory for the Sussex contingent would see them overtake The Chats with a game in hand. Either way, it’s another crucial clash, and here’s what the gaffer had to say:
Obviously an emotional day for you on Saturday, but a good day regardless with an important victory. How would you sum it up?
“Yeah, exactly that! It was very emotional, a tough day for us but our football family got around us and fragged us through it. The lads were fantastic so yeah, all in all, it was a sad day but it ended very well.”
It was a very tight game, what do you think was the difference between the two sides?
“It was a tight game to be fair, we weren’t at our best. We’ve been great for the last four or five weeks so the fact that we’re able to win games when we’re not quite at our best is testament to our players: how hard they’ve worked and how dogged we are to beat at the moment.
We’re a tough side to play against and I think that was the difference on the day. We were more clinical on the day, we took our chances well and scored two really good goals. We defended really well too, we were tough to break down on Saturday.”
And so onto Chatham, a side very much fresh in the mind. Do you think it will be a similar sort of match to the one a few weeks ago?
“Yeah, definitely. It’s that business end of the season where it’s not about performances, and all about results. It’s the same for anyone in the league, really, for different reasons. We’ve got six cup finals now and we aim to win as many of them as we can and see where it takes us at the end of it! But we’re in a good place.”
They boast a rather impressive home record, unbeaten at home all season…do you have the belief that your side will go there and get the three points?
“I trust this group against anybody in this league. On our day, if we’re at it, it’s been proven that we can beat anybody. We’re in good shape, confidence is really high and I know the players are really excited and looking forward to the game on Saturday so yeah, it’s something that we’re relishing.”
