Whitehawk 2-3 Wingate & Finchley
Bostik Premier League: Game 4
The Hawks tasted defeat for the first time this season following a 3-2 defeat against Wingate & Finchley at The TerraPura Ground.
The opening to the game was subdued with the Hawks having the best chance after 13 minutes with a dipping volley by full debutant Kwai Marsh-Brown going narrowly over the bar. After a barrage of attempts by Wingate on the Hawks’ goal, the hosts struck first as Jason Williams powered through the Blues’ defence to tap the ball over the line. Just under 10 minutes later, the visitors were level as they were awarded a penalty after Lewis Putman was adjudged to have been felled in the box by Aaron Goode. The kick was converted by captain Marc Weatherstone, following an initial save by Hawks’ keeper Melvin Minter.
After 7 minutes of added time following an injury to Scott Shulton, the Blues were awarded another penalty after a handball in the area, with Weatherstone once again finding the net for a 2-1 half-time lead.
The second half was a very quiet affair, but 8 minutes from time, Wingate sealed victory after Marc Charles-Smith took advantage of some poor Hawks defending to make it 3-1. Late drama was to follow after Luke Emberson headed in a cross from Henry Muggeridge after 89 minutes with The Hawks then pushing for a equaliser, but the Blues held on for their first three points.
