Isthmian League

Preview | VCD Athletic (H)

What do Spalding United, AFC Sudbury and Whitehawk all have in common? They are the only three unbeaten teams remaining at Step Four of the Non-League pyramid after the weekend’s results.

Indeed, there are just five teams who remain unbeaten across steps one to four and such is the Hawks’ form that they can count themselves amongst them.

The latest chapter of that impressive run came on Saturday when Shaun Saunders’ side drew 1-1 at high-flying Ashford United.

Charlie Harris’ free kick cancelled out Jarred Trespaderne’s effort at Homelands Stadium as the spoils were shared.

The visitors

And another close game can be expected tonight as the fourth-place Hawks welcome a VCD Athletic side who sit sixth in the early Isthmian League South East table.

However, after sitting in second spot last month the Vickers have lost their last four games to drop down the table.

The latest defeat on Saturday came as a surprise as they fell 3-2 to away at struggling Corinthian. James Billings got a brace for the hosts with Oscar Housego also on target. Soul Kader and David Ozobia got the goals for VCD but they proved to be in vein with all five goals coming in the first half at Gay Dawn Farm.

Anthony Adesite is one of the ones to watch for the visitors tonight. The forward was last season’s top scorer and has scored five times already this term.

Recent meetings

Last season saw the Hawks complete a league double over the Vickers, with late drama on both occasions.

Javaun Splatt scored twice, including a late winner, as the Hawks prevailed 2-1 at The TerraPura Ground back on November 13th 2021.

The return game at Oakwood back in March was a lot more entertaining. Former Hawk Kevin Lisbie gave the hosts the lead at the break, before Ashley Wadhams drew Hawks level after the hour mark. Omarr Lawson then struck five minutes from time, but Jeff Duah-Kessie looked like giving the hosts a point with an equaliser on 87 minutes. Yet there was still time for Splatt to strike even later on to earn Hawks a 3-2 win.

With the chance to move up to third depending on other results, the Hawks will be determined to continue their unbeaten start tonight and give the home crowd something to cheer about.
