Match Report

Worthing 2-0 Whitehawk

Whitehawk were defeated 2-0 at Woodside Road in the Bostik Premier League following a Callum Kealy strike and a controversial David Ajiboye penalty.

After 3 minutes, Worthing were awarded a dubious penalty after Yannis Ambroisine was alleged to have fouled Callum Kealy inside the penalty area, which was calmly scored by David Ajiboye to give the Rebels a pretty undeserved lead. 10 minutes later they could have doubled their lead after Alfie Young headed a Rebels corner over the bar. The Hawks could have equalised after Lucas Rodrigues had a shot brilliantly deflected behind by Jalen Jones and the resulting corner was cleared. Worthing broke well through Ajiboye, but after playing in Kwame Poku, his shot went wide.

The Rebels maintained possession through the half, with The Hawks being outplayed, struggling to get forward and create chances. The Hawks could have equalised on the stroke of half time after Duane Ofori-Acheampong did well to beat a Worthing defender on the far side to cross in towards Nathaniel Pinney, though his shot was blocked and cleared to keep the Rebels ahead at the break.

The second half started in a similar fashion to the first, with Worthing scoring 4 minutes into the half as a shot by Ricky Aguair was pushed away by Melvin Minter into the path of Callum Kealy, who struck home to give the home side a 2-0 lead. 12 minutes into the half the Hawks could have mounted the fightback, but former Hawk Lucas Covolan was out quickly to deny Henry Mugerridge in a one-on-one. That chance seemed to spur on Whitehawk as they started to push forward more, with Lucas Rodrigues prominent, though attacks were being hampered by strong winds blowing across the stadium.

The wind nearly had the assist for a Worthing goal as Minter made a great save to push a free kick by Aguair behind for a corner which ultimately came to nothing. Just a minute later the same thing happened after an Aguair free kick from 40 yards out was carried by the wind, forcing Minter to push the ball behind for a corner which again came to nothing. 10 minutes from time Worthing could have killed the game off as Jesse Starkey was brilliantly played through on goal and with Minter doing his best to distract him, the shot bounced off the post and out for a goal kick.

The Hawks kept trying to get back into the game but battling a stern Worthing defence and awful conditions, it just wasn’t possible as the Hawks fall to a 2-0 derby defeat.
