Match Report

Whitehawk 0-0 Margate
Bostik Premier League: Game 5

The Hawks had to settle for a Bank Holiday point and a first clean sheet of the season in a game of few chances at the TerraPura Ground this afternoon. Both teams were playing their second game in three days and although there was plenty of endeavour, it was the defences that came out on top.

The Hawks were missing both Jason Williams and Aaron Goode, with Ky Marsh-Brown only fit enough for the bench. Manager Jude Macdonald gave Lewis Broughton and Ed Sanders their first starts of the season and also welcomed back Lucas Rodrigues from suspension. Luke Emberson replaced Reece Hallard in midfield. Sharing managerial duties for the visitors was Steve Brown, who made his Hawks debut as a 15-year old in 1988, before playing over 200 games for Charlton Athletic.

Playing uphill in an uneventful first half, the Hawks were restricted to just two shots on target. Early on, Rodrigues cutting in from the right, saw his shot comfortably saved by Henry Newcombe in the Margate goal and in the 33rd minute the overlapping Broughton had an effort saved at the near post.

The main threat for Gate was Aristide Bassele on the right, but there was little end product to worry Melvin Minter, as Harry Shooman and Ed Sanders dealt well with the presence of Joe Taylor down the middle.

James Fraser toiled away on his own up front for the Hawks and held the ball up well. He was booked in the 63rd minute when he raced back to defend a break away following a Hawks corner and brought down Bassele. Two minutes later Minter reacted well to keep out Alex Brown’s shot, with Taylor nodding the rebound just wide.

Gate did have the ball in the net twice in the second half, from Taylor and Bassele, but both efforts were clearly off side.

An appearance by Ky Marsh-Brown from the bench for the last ten minutes, matched with Lewis Broughton being pushed forward on the right, gave the Hawks hope of snatching a late winner. After Hallard saw a shot saved in the 84th minute, a far post header by Fraser from a Broughton cross just crept the wrong side of the upright two minutes from time.
