Match Report

A dramatic season ended in dramatic fashion as the Whitehawk players stayed on the pitch after the final whistle waiting for other results to be confirmed.

An action packed first half has the hosts … go behind, regain the lead and go behind again!

Sutton were already confirmed for home advantage in the play-offs and nobody was expecting anything other than a very tough match against one of the division’s outstanding teams.

Whitehawk showed their intention early creating decent chances, with Jake Robinson and Dominic Green causing Sutton some problems, but the first goal went to the visitors on 27 minutes when Dale Binns broke the back line to slot home.

Five minutes later Danny Mills was brought down in the penalty area and the spot kick from Jake Robinson sent Welsh international keeper Jason Brown the wrong way for the equaliser.

Another 5 minutes (37mins) and Danny Mills threw himself at a low cross well worked in by Waide Fairhurst – to take the lead.

Five minutes later Craig Dundas equalised for Sutton with another breakthrough, going one-on-one with Hawks keeper Winterton, who saved well palming the ball away, but the resultant loose ball was rolled in by Dundas.

Two minutes later, on 45 minutes, home keeper Chris Winterton tried to dribble around the advancing Dale Binns and was unloaded – Binns put the ball into the empty net.

The second half had chances at either end and the crowd was full of mobile phones and rumours of scores at other ground … Whitehawk for ‘relegated’ for most of the second half – as other results stood. Both sides used all their substitutes and Whitehawk had to commit numbers forward.

Only a win could give the home side a chance of a second season at this level. Waide Fairhurst obliged on 76 minutes after being supplied by substitute Dean McDonald, and the celebrations were beginning … even Superman was in the crowd.

It was sometime after the final whistle when other scores were confirmed and the home team ran to celebrate with Superman and his friends.
