Manager Steve King’s comments: “This was another professional performance, considering injuries and how we have to ‘shuffle the pack‘ – it’s another outstanding result. On chances created we were worth our win and I thought we could certainly have won by a bigger margin.”
This place is much improved since our last visit – when it was a sand covered boggy pitch. It was manager Steve King’s first game in charge and we were in a relegation battle. Today we come away with the points again, but this time it puts us up into 3rd place in the Conference South – the highest standing this club has ever achieved.
Since that last visit Gosport have played at Wembley in the FA Trophy Final – a fantastic achievement. The SIX figure profit from this cup run has been invested in the facilities, and it shows: lots improvements all around the ground and the pitch is a relaid carpet with drainage and sprinklers installed all over it.
Today it’s a hot end of summer day and the sprinklers are welcome!
Whitehawk start confidently and after 6 minutes Pa Saikou Kujabi finds the ball coming back to him just outside the box – his shot hits the post and Gosport clear for a corner.
Sergio Torres needs attention a few minutes later as he is the subject of several fouls with a few minutes and after Frantz Tchonang is bundled into the railings while seeing a ball out of play – the referee chooses to speak to the Gosport captain about the proximity of the railings … no further incidents occur.
Danny Mills opens the scoring on 23 minutes, he is fed through to beat the offside and is quickly one-on-one with keeper, Gosport defender Lee Molyneaux does slide between the two but Mills deceives them both and fires across Nathan Ashmore to score.
Six minutes later Jake Robinson wins a corner and Frantz Tchonang side foots home from 7 yards. A goal in only his second start for the club is followed by huge celebrations, the big French centre back only started his first game for the club in midweek, with an assured performance against Sutton.
HT Gosport 0-2 Whitehawk
Obviously Gosport come out intent on putting things right and Whitehawk concede a penalty on 55 minutes, which Justin Bennett scores … 1-2.
A few minutes later Gosport make a double substitution (bringing on two wide players) and a (long) period of Gosport endeavour has to be withstood. Callum Driver and Lee Hills are both involved in crucial defensive duties.
Jake Robinson is substituted for Sergio Makofo, who’s runs down the right wing cause problems for the rest of the afternoon. Ahmed Adbulla has a few long range efforts – the best of which is only inches wide from fully 30 yards.
Whitehawk appear to score with a shot which hits the crossbar and bounces down (on or over the line) on 82 minutes – no goal is given.
Unfortunately on 87 minutes Brett Poate the Gosport no.5 is send off for a challenge on Serge Makofo. On 90 minutes the Gosport keeper makes a great save and then takes the ball upfield …. Callum Driver is there to see it out.
