SuperHawks pre-season finale
Tuesday 4th August 2015: Merstham FC 1–3 Whitehawk FC
The scene for Whitehawk’s last pre-season friendly before the league campaign gets under way was a pleasantly warm evening in picturesque Merstham.
The Hawks started cautiously, no doubt due to a number of trialists starting, but it quickly fell into a strong possession styled game of football. New signing Danny Stevens was a handful down the left side, connecting with Scott Neilson. He was moving the ball around effortlessly, frustrating the opposition.
Nick Arnold once again looked threatening at right back, making dangerous runs deep into Merstham’s half, and as he cut into the box on one particularly penetrating run, he was harshly brought down and the Hawks were awarded a penalty. Danny Stevens was the man to step up and calmly slot it home in the 35th minute. Craig Ross wasn’t tested much in the first half but the couple of times he was, proving just why he is such a highly rated shot stopper, denying Merstham from any sight of goal.

The second half started with a buzz as Sam Deering repeatedly ripped open Merstham’s midfield, connecting with Jake Robinson who came close to doubling the Hawks’ lead straight after coming off the bench. Not long after that, Robinson made a dangerous run into the box while fending off pressure from several defenders to coolly put the Hawks three up in the 60th minute. The Hawks settled into their stride as attack after attack proved too much for the opposition, and on 68 minutes Jake Robinson took a speculative shot from 30 yards out that snuck under the goal keeper making it 3-0. The Hawks nearly made it four when Sergio Torres battled his way into the box showing immense strength and skill to fend off the enclosing defenders, but his shot was pushed away by the keeper. A defensive error saw Merstham pull a goal back in the 87th minute and the game finished 3-1 to the Hawks.
Whitehawk, ready from an unbeaten pre-season, go into their first league match of the campaign against Hayes and Yeading on Saturday. We hope to see as many of you as possible to cheer on the mighty Superhawks
