Pagham 0-2 Whitehawk
Emirates FA Cup: First Qualifying Round
Whitehawk are through to the Second Qualifying Round of the Emirates FA Cup after a 2-0 win away at Pagham.
The home side had the first chance of the game after 3 minutes with Callum Overton hitting a stinging shot which Melvin Minter was able to palm away to allow Ed Sanders to clear. Pagham continued to look strong through the opening stages, getting through a number of times though the Hawks defence held firm. The first real chance for the Hawks came after 22 minutes with Henry Muggeridge hitting a deep free kick into the box to find a rising Aaron Goode, who had his header saved by James Binfield. The Lions best chance came 10 minutes from the break as Howard Neighbour hit the near post under pressure from Hawks keeper Minter. A few minutes later, Whitehawk had their best chance with Lucas Rodrigues having a shot deflected behind which was cleared by the hosts. With the break closing in, Pagham looked to break the deadlock but Callum Overton could only find the side netting at close range to send us into the break level.
With only 4 minutes gone in the second half, James Fraser headed the Hawks into a 1-0 lead after a great ball into the box by Henry Muggeridge for his 7th assist in 7 games. 10 minutes later, the threatening George Gaskin hit a spectacular effort from 25 yards out which left Melvin Minter helpless, fortunately it also went just over the bar. Midway through the half, tempers from the home side began to fray, not helped by questionable decisions given against both sides. Into added time, Hawks keeper Minter saved an attempt right on the edge of the goal from Overton, prompting cries from the home fans for a penalty insisting Minter was outside the box, but the officials were unmoved. The game was wrapped up in the second minute of injury time with Muggeridge again being provider to tee up Ashley Mutongerwa for his first goal and to send the Hawks through to the next round.
