Vanarama Conference South … Saturday 14th March 2014
Boreham Wood FC 2 – 2 Whitehawk FC
This was 2nd v 4th in a tight run-in to the end of the season, with automatic and playoff places being fought for.
Boreham Wood, recent leaders of the league would be keen to avenge the solid 3-0 reverse handed to them when they visited Whitehawk a few weeks ago.
It finished level, with the visitors not hitting their stride until the second half.
The referee wasn’t popular with anyone today and he started his input to the game after only a few minutes – by calling both managers together to discuss their comments on his performance so far!
Boreham Wood took the lead on 21 minutes when a long ball upfield deceived the Whitehawk midfield and was quickly moved down the left flank – crossed for the onrushing Morais to score. It stayed that way until half time, with Craig Ross in the Hawks goal called upon to make a few good saves. Just before halftime Sergio Torres was brought down in the penalty area and, to his horror, the penalty was not given but he was given a yellow card for diving!
Whitehawk, as expected, came out energised for the second half and enjoyed much more penetration and started to get on top.
Jake Robinson got an excellent equaliser on 64 minutes when he turned and turned again before curling in a shot, in off the post, from wide and just outside the box.
Chances were rare for Boreham in the second half, but Craig Ross did well to stand up to Morias after he got one-on-one with the Hawks keeper.
On 76 minutes Jake Robinson worked his way in from the right and fired across goal for a sliding Danny Mills to force the ball high into the Wood net.
Having been behind for so much of the game, most supporters might have settled for a point, but now the prospect of 3 points ….. lasted about 3 minutes before Ricky Shakes equalised for Boreham Wood, from close range, via a cross from the left flank.
2 – 2 final score.
Manager Steve King: “I think a draw was a fair result. But EVERYONE knows that was a penalty!”
“On reflection, 4 out of 6 points against a team that has spent most of the season at the top of the table has to be a decent haul.”
BOREHAM WOOD: Russell, Herd, Garrard, Cox, Hill, Reynolds, Thomas, Shakes, Angol, Morias (Walker 81), McMahon (Whichelow 81). Subs not used: Martin, Montgomery, Courtnage
