Whitehawk 1 -2 Staines Town (ht 0-2)
Whitehawk kicked off the new season with only 3 players from last season’s squad: Lee Hills and Jake Robinson starting plus Danny Mills on the bench.
After only 8 minutes Whitehawk’s Sergio Torres brought down Staines’ Sanchez Ming, the resulting penalty from Louie Theophanous went into the net low and to the left – Lance Cronin in the Hawks goal going the other way.
Theophanous was proving a problem for the home side throughout the half, with long range efforts and runs into the box.
A decent chance for the hosts on 15 minutes came when Jake Robinson’s attempted lob was just over the Staines goal after good hustling work from Matthew Barnes-Homer and Jean-Paul Kissock stopped the visitors clearing effectly.
For Staines Sanchez Ming was causing problems – one run into the box needed good defending from Osei Sankofa – to stop him going all the way.
Theophanous’ second goal came on 30 minutes a bursting run and shot from the right going across the home keeper in the far corner.
Just before half-time Hawks had one of those “how did that not go in” moments, with the visiting keeper initially tipping a shot onto bar and another two attempts finally ending in offside.
The hosts stepped it up in the second half and Jake Robinson chased back a 50/50 ball that Staines keeper Jack Turner did well to save after 54 minutes. Shortly after the same keeper tipped a good shot from the lively Jean-Paul Kissock onto the crossbar.
Whitehawk’s endeavours paid off on 64 minutes when the energetic Sam Deering shot and scored firmly from the edge of the penalty area.
The remaining minutes were filled with all six substitutions and Whitehawk pressure, the best effort being a Jean-Paul Kissock acrobatic cycle kick that thumped into the hoarding just wide of goal.
A tempting free kick to the hosts, in the final minute – sailed over the bar to send a very decent Staines Town home with the points.
