A brace from Danny Mills put Whitehawk on their way into the play off places after a comfortable victory of struggling Hayes & Yeading United.

Mills scored either side of the break for Steve King’s side, who overtake Gosport into fifth place with three games to go.

On another day it could have been more than just the two goals for the Hawks, with Craig Ross never really tested at a breezy East Brighton Park.

Whitehawk started on the front foot, with Neilson firing over the top before Mills was flagged for offside when through on goal as King’s side looked to take an early lead.

Twenty minutes in, they came close to doing so after Neilson did well to work himself into space on the right wing, and his cross destined for Mills’ head was headed just wide of the his own goal by the covering Jim Fenlon.

Grant Smith in the United goal then did well to get something on another great delivery from Neilson to deny Sam Gargan what would have been a tap in, before the hosts went in front after the half hour mark.

Nick Arnold delivered a brilliant free kick in from just inside the United half, and picked out the towering Mills who held off his marker at the far post to head the ball back across goal, beyond Smith, and into the far corner.

Despite being up against it for most of the half, Hayes almost responded with a goal of their own moments later when Greg Morgan fired a low ball in from the right and found Dylan Kearney at the near post, but he failed to hit the target from ten yards.

The Hawks then should have added to their 1-0 half time lead minutes into the second period, when Gargan put through Mills. The forward took the ball around the advancing Smith, but Fenlon got across well to clear his effort off the line.

However, Mills made up for this miss with a sublime goal that put the game to bed twenty minutes from time. Neilson played another great ball through, and found the run of Mills who controlled the ball well before striking it on the half volley beyond the helpless Smith and into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

The hosts had chances to add to their lead to make the scoreline more convincing, with Gargan heading an Arnold cross over the bar before the right-back ran onto Neilson’s through ball and was through on goal. However, with Mills waiting unmarked in the centre, he was caught between two minds as to go for goal himself to complete Mills’ hat-trick, and he could only scuff the ball into the arms of Smith at the near post.

Late on, Sam Deering failed in his attempts to find an unmarked Ahmed Abdulla in the centre who would have surely scored his first league goal for the Hawks, but that wasn’t to dampen what was a solid display from Whitehawk.
