Weston-Super-Mare FC 1 – 1 Whitehawk FC

This re-arranged game looked like it might go the same way as the previous rain affected fixture, back in November, when it started to rain heavily 30 minutes before kick off ….. and continued through the evening (and night on the way home!)

The noisey (in a good way!) visiting supporters enjoyed Sam Deering going close early on. The same player having a decent effort from a free kick too – a similar dead ball situation from the opposition brought a very good save from Craig Ross.

Weston-Super-Mare scored with their first chance of the game on 22nd minutes, when an intended cut back, by Mare’s Grubb, from around the edge of the 18 yd box – was sliced a bit narrower than intended and found the net via a deflection.

Whitehawk replied through Osie Sankofa, on 34 minutes, who finished a good move by passing the ball into the net.

The visitors had the better of the first half. A surging run from full back Nick Arnold caused problems for WSM – as did many runs tonight on what fast became a difficult pitch. Jake Robinson’s goal bound volley, a certain goal, hit his own player on the line – but Whitehawk couldn’t add to the HT scoreline of 1-1.

Manager Steve King: “It was the clichéd ‘game of two halves’ – we were better than them in the first half and they were better in the 2nd half.”

WSM were more into the game in the 2nd period and Whitehawk were grateful to Craig Ross a few times with quality saves.

Whitehawk still enjoyed periods of good pressure and from one of the corners WSM’s no.5 Jordan was relieved when his sliced near post clearance fizzed over his own bar by about 2 inches. Sam Deering was causing problems for WSM for his runs down the right wing and on one occasion when Danny Mills ran from wide into the 6 yard box, his cut-back was agonisingly just behind Serge Makofo.

In the final few moments of the game a WSM player took a ball down on his knee with his back to goal, then turned and fired a well struck shot, which Craig Ross palmer over the bar.

Manager Steve King: “You’d have to say it was a fair result – we should have taken our chances in the first half.”
