Whitehawk 1-1 Concord Rangers

Vanarama Conference South

Whitehawk battled back from a goal down against Concord Rangers to earn a 1-1 draw and keep themselves in the play off places in the Vanarama Conference South.

The home side suffered an early blow as striker Jake Robinson pulled up injured after 8 minutes, Robinson appearing to hold his hamstring as he left the field. Winger Scott Neilson came on to make his debut, having signed a few days previously. This prompted a slight change in shape for the Hawks and for the most part the first half saw few openings as defences were on top. While there was probing from both sides, neither keeper was especially troubled until the 37th minute when Rangers’ top scorer Steve Cawley was played in and lifted the ball over Craig Ross in the Whitehawk goal to give the visitors the lead, and that was how the game stayed until the half time whistle.

HT 0-1

The hosts gained more of a foothold in the game as the second half went on and started to exert an increasing amount of pressure on the Concord defence. Danny Mills went close a couple of times, before right back Nick Arnold smacked the crossbar with a ferocious strike from the edge of the box on the hour mark. Eventually Whitehawk did find an equaliser on 71 minutes when Arnold crossed in from the right flank and Mills headed home, not to be denied this time. Concord’s Lewis Taaffe had a goal ruled out for offside just minutes later and from there on in it looked as though either side could snatch it. However, neither team could find that winning goal and the match ended honours even at 1-1. The result brings an end to Whitehawk’s excellent run of home wins, but they are still unbeaten on their own soil in 9 league games. Whitehawk stay 5th, while Concord stay 10th.

FT 1-1
