Chelmsford City 1-0 Whitehawk
Saturday 7th January 2017
National League South
A brave and battling performance wasn’t enough for The Hawks on a chilly afternoon in Essex as they were narrowly defeated 1-0 by playoff chasing Chelmsford City.
The Hawks had the opportunity to take an early lead via a mistake by Clarets ‘keeper Ross Fitzsimons, who slipped as he took a goal kick and shanked it straight to Mike West, who narrowly volleyed over the open goal. Both sides however had early chances, the best of which for the Home side being a Robbie Willmott free-kick which was struck just inches over the bar. Throughout the First Half Chelmsford grew and they forced young debutant Hawks keeper Tom Stewart into a string of marvellous saves to keep the score level at 0-0 at Half Time.
The Second Half started slow but Chelmsford substitute Chris Dickson became the hosts main threat, but The Hawks’ defence stood firm, with Dan Harding doing brilliantly to win back possession on more than one occasion. New signings Kevin Lisbie and Brian Howard were brought on in an attempt to counter the threat by Chelmsford, but the hosts broke the deadlock in the 78th minute after they were given a corner by referee Paul Kelly, despite Joint Manager Paul Reid being shoved over before the ball went out of play. From the corner, defender Max Cornhill tapped past a helpless Tom Stewart. Things went from bad to worse for The Hawks seven minutes later as Captain Sergio Torres was stretchered off with a nasty leg injury, putting the visitors down to 10 men as all substitutions had already been made.
