Whitehawk 1-1 Kingstonian
Bostik Premier League: Game 8
In an evenly matched game of few chances, it took an 89th minute own goal to rescue a draw for Whitehawk against a well-organised Kingstonian side.
In a tight first half, neither side was able to make the most of the chances that came their way. Hawks skipper Henry Muggeridge pulled a good opportunity wide of the post in the 16th minute after being played in by James Fraser. The most eye-catching moment came when K’s striker Elliott Buchanan beat the offside trap on the right and saw his fierce left foot shot deflected off the top of the crossbar for a corner, with Melvin Minter being credited with a finger-tip save.
Attacking down the slope, the Hawks came out for the second half in more determined mood and forced a couple of early corners. Harry Shooman, overlapping on the left, then saw his shot saved at the near post by Rob Tolfrey, with Fraser and Jason Williams inches away from converting. In the 63rd minute, it was Kingstonian who eventually broke the deadlock, as Buchanan picked up a throw in from the right wing inside the box and placed the ball through the legs of Aaron Goode into the bottom corner of Minter’s net.
Hawks manager Jude Macdonald introduced Kwai Marsh-Brown and Reece Hallard, with Lucas Rodrigues switching to playing down the middle. Marsh-Brown, using his pace on the right side of midfield, made an immediate impact with some incisive bursts into the box. With time running out the Hawks forced two late corners. The K’s defence looked very uncertain from the first and Williams’ header was deflected over the bar. Muggeridge swung the second kick iunder the crossbar and K’s defender Sean Francis was one of three visiting players to rise to head clear. The ball bounced into the net off his left shoulder, under pressure at the far post from Reece Hallard.
The Hawks then came close to snatching an unlikely victory in the third minute of added time. With the last kick of the match, after more confusion in the K’s goalmouth following yet another Muggeridge corner, defender Matt Drage saw his goal bound shot blocked in the six-yard box.
