Friday 26th December 2014 Vanarama Conference South
Whitehawk FC 2 – 0 Eastbourne Borough FC
Boxing Day and pouring rain on a pitch that became more difficult as the wind and rain hammered down … saw Whitehawk produce a great display in a match that kept everybody engaged until the final minutes.
The Hawks had taken the lead in the 9th minute, when a poor Eastbourne back header arrived straight at Jake Robinson who made no mistake with his finish.
From then until the 90th minute, it was an action packed match. There were some stiff tackles, including a few poor challenges – most of which centred on Sergio Torres, which surprisingly resulted in only a yellow card produced. In the 90th minute Hawks’ full back Nick Arnold made a terrific run to the Eastbourne goal line – and then along it, was brought down for a penalty. Sam Deering scored from the spot to finally put the game beyond Eastbourne’s reach.
The entertaining thriller that filled those ‘in between’ minutes showed Whitehawk having the bulk of the possession and creating lots of chances. But with a slender lead it was always edgy moments when the visitors broke forward. Fortunately the home defence stayed secure when called upon.
Manager Steve King: “I thought we thoroughly deserved the win but it could have been more comfortable, we hit the post amongst a good number of chances, but those missed chances saw the game run until the very end, or – until Nick Arnold’s great run.”
This win takes Whitehawk up to 3rd in the table, having taken 19 points from the possible last 21 points, and with only 1 day to rest, will travel to Farnborough on Sunday for the next holiday fixture.
The return game against Eastbourne Borough will be played on New Years’ Day.
