Match Report

Whitehawk 2-1 Three Bridges
Velocity Trophy: Preliminary Round

Whitehawk progressed to the next round of the Velocity Trophy to set up a tie away against Sussex rivals Bognor Regis Town after a 2-1 win over Bostik South East side Three Bridges at The TerraPura Ground.

The Hawks got off to a fast start with Lucas Rodrigues rising highest to head in a well taken corner by Brannon O’Neill after just 8 minutes. The lead should have been doubled not long after, but The Bridges defended bravely to block and save shots by Rodrigues and O’Neill respectively. After dominating the opening stages, Three Bridges grew into the game with starting ‘keeper Melvin Minter making a good save to deny Connor French as the first half drew towards a close.

The opening minutes of the second half were filled with action, with Three Bridges immediately going after an equaliser after Connor French forced a good save from substitute ‘keeper Jordan Hawkins. The Hawks then doubled their lead 2 minutes into the half with Ky Marsh-Brown hitting a great strike from 25 yards out which flew past a helpless Kieron Thorp in the Bridges goal. French then tried narrowing the deficit straight from the restart, but Hawkins was once again there to make a good save.

As the game went on, the Hawks grew more defensive and sat back, absorbing all the attacks mounted by the visitors, with Omar Folkes and John Lansdale shooting wide. James Waters came off the bench to make his Whitehawk debut, replacing Jason Williams. At just 17 years and 16 days old, Waters becomes the youngest player to play for the Hawks in the ‘modern era’. The Hawks could have wrapped things up 11 minutes from the end with Kwai Marsh-Brown striking from distance to force a good save from Thorp. With the game seemingly wrapped up, Three Bridges grabbed a goal back with Daniel da Costa e Silva scoring with a shot which went through a crowded penalty area into the back of the net. Fortunately the referee’s whistle came a short while later and the Hawks will travel West to the Bognor in early September.
