Whitehawk FC 0 – 0 Havant & Waterlooville FC
Match Sponsor: David McKenna
Havant and Waterlooville warmed up for the FA Cup test against Preston with a draw at The Enclosed Ground. Considering the great run that H&W are on, they’ve lost 1 game in the last 14 – in all competitions, a draw is a decent result against a team that are all but fulltime professionals.
Recent history shows that H&W have kept 9 clean sheets out of 10, whilst we recently shipped 12 goals in 4 games. So our recent run is showing that good progress is being made. If you discount the freak goal at Staines, this could have been 3 clean sheets in a row for us today.
So today’s game is a good measure of progress and Whitehawk had the better of a fairly even first half, although the visitors could have opened the scoring after 18 minutes from JJ Hooper’s close range header, but Craig Ross was well placed to collect the ball.
Whitehawk went close through Danny Mills after good work by Jake Robinson. The visitors had a chance via Ben Swallow but he shot over the bar.
In stoppage time Jake Robinson’s free kick was narrowly wide, with the H&W keeper beaten, the ball only needed to bend a touch more …
HT 0 – 0
The second half was similarly engaging with Whitehawk keeping the ball for long periods but, not being able to find that final cutting edge. While H&W, for their part, were hitting the hosts on the break.
One break, on 72 minutes, saw Hooper beat the Whitehawk defence to a long ball over the top but luckily his shot rebounded off the inside of the post safely away. Late in the game Whitehawk had long range efforts from Sam Deering and debutant Gerardo Blanco.
Goaless is how it ended and we march onto St Albans next Saturday in good shape.
