Match Report

St Albans City 3-1 Whitehawk

Saturday 27th August 2016

National League South

The Hawks’ poor start to the season continued on Saturday afternoon in Hertfordshire as they were defeated 3-1 by a well organised St Albans City side.

Both games between The Hawks and The Saints last season ended up with 6-0 score lines, but both sides are much changed since the previous meetings. After an uneventful start to the match, St Albans grew into the game the quickest with successive chances by Shaun Lucien and Josh Hill. However, The Saints broke the deadlock first through Louis Theophanous, who hit a good strike past a helpless Adri Munoz from 20 yards out. Munoz single handedly kept the scoreline at 1-0 going into Half Time by making a string of good saves to deny Lucien, Theophanous and former Hawks loanee Junior Morias.

The hosts also started the Second Half the quickest and doubled their lead in the 48th minute with Louis Theophanous getting his second goal of the game after a quick break by Junior Morias. The Hawks’ best chance of the game came in the 61st minute after a shot by Lucho Infante was pushed towards the path of a waiting Danny Mills by St Albans keeper James Russell, but St Albans managed to clear the danger away from the goal line. The Hawks pulled themselves back into the game in the 76th minute after Sergio Torres went on a great run from the centre of the pitch to fire past Russell from 15 yards out. However, any hopes of a comeback were dashed 10 minutes later after some excellent control by Sam Merson, son of former Arsenal and England Midfielder Paul Merson, scored a brilliant goal to seal victory for The Saints.

There was time however for one final chance from The Hawks deep in injury time after Danny Mills headed a great chance towards goal, only for the St Albans ‘keeper Russell to make a great save and push the effort against the bar, which was then cleared by the Home side.

The Hawks will be quickly looking to bounce back from their latest disappointment as they face early season strugglers Concord Rangers at The Enclosed Ground on Bank Holiday Monday.
