National League South
Whitehawk sealed their place in the National League South Playoff with a resounding 3-0-win over fellow playoff-place chasers Hemel Hempstead.
A win for either side would have seen them qualify for the post-season and The Hawks started the brightest with headers from Chris M’Boungou and Jordan Rose hitting the bar and being saved on the line respectively. Hemel came into the game as the First Half went on with Jamie Slabber being the main threat for the hosts, first heading just over the crossbar and second forcing Hawks ‘keeper Craig Ross into a brilliant save. Shortly after, Slabber had another chance but a close range he could only hit the post, but a follow up attempt by Hemel was cleared off the line, though fans and some Hemel players believed it cross the line, nothing was given by the officials.
The Hawks took the lead in the 25th minute after another great cross by Nick Arnold found David Martin, who did well to stay onside and executed a great finish past Jamie Butler. Hemel again came back a short time later via Slabber, though his effort was deflected onto the bar and cleared away. Whitehawk’s lead was doubled shortly before halftime as goalscorer Martin found Danny Mills open in the box and the striker thumped his effort into the top of the goal, sending The Hawks into a 2-0 lead at the half.
The Second Half was much more uneventful compared the First Half, but it nearly came into life in the 61st minute through Alex Osborn, though his header could only hit the underside of the bar and not cross the line. A short time later however Whitehawk sealed the victory and their place in the playoffs as Danny Mills surged forward on the right wing and passed to David Martin, who coolly slotted the ball past Butler to seal a 3-0 win for The Hawks, their 6th win in their last 7 games.
Whitehawk will now take on long-time league leaders Ebbsfleet United in the playoffs, with the first leg taking place at The Enclosed Ground on Wednesday 4th May with a 7.45PM kickoff.
