Tuesday July 28th – Pre-season friendly
Eastbourne Town 0 – 2 Whitehawk FC
A very blustery evening in Eastbourne saw the Hawks ready for their next pre-season run out.
A strong looking side took to the field in the first half with an impressive show of possession and movement that kept Hawks on top from the off, with Sergio Torres and Arnaud Mendy dominant in the middle. A trialist from the previous friendly with Hastings United once again featured, and he proved to be strong and full of energy in front of goal and had a very close shot go just wide.
Eastbourne’s defence proved difficult to break down, until in the 25th minute Sam Deering was clattered to the ground in the box, but the referee gave a free kick to Eastbourne. This seemed to spur Deering on, and in the 30th minute he broke the deadlock with a lively turn and shot into the bottom corner of the net.
The second half saw Danny Mills come on; as the clock tower overlooking the pitch bells chimed at 9pm only a few minutes in, he put the Hawks two up from a ball hit by Sam Deering.
Impressive new signing Curtis Gayler came on in the second half and asked many questions of the Eastbourne defence, including a lovely little overhead flick for Nick Arnold to run onto, and even coming close to scoring a wicked shot that Eastbourne’s keeper managed to push behind. Jake Robinson had a goal in the closing minutes, which was frustratingly ruled off side. The Hawks came away with a comfortable 2-0 win but credit to Eastbourne for standing their ground and maintaining solid defence. Next up Crawley Town at the Enclosed, it’s gonna be a big one!
